Texas Bill of Sale: What You Need for a Private Car Sale
By Jainendra YadavJun 15, 2026
Texas private car sales happen every weekend in parking lots, driveways, and dealership curbs. The bill of sale is your proof of price and parties even when the title does the heavy legal lifting. Texas buyers and sellers should treat the form as part of the title packet, not an optional extra.
Include seller and buyer names, sale date, sale price, and a full vehicle description. The VIN must match the title exactly. Record the odometer reading honestly; federal law still cares about mileage disclosures on many vehicles. If the car is sold as-is, say so clearly so the buyer knows there is no dealer warranty behind the deal.
The buyer usually handles title transfer with the county tax office. Your bill of sale travels with Form 130-U and proof of insurance. Keep a signed copy in case the buyer delays registration and a parking ticket arrives at your old address.
Trailers, boats, and general property sales in Texas use similar ideas with different forms. Match the document to the item and keep language plain.
