What is a bill of sale and when do you need one?
A bill of sale is a written record that property changed hands from a seller to a buyer. It is not the same as a title for vehicles, but DMVs often want both during registration. For furniture, tools, livestock, or equipment, the bill of sale may be the only formal document you create.
Strong bills of sale name both parties, describe the item clearly, state the price and date, and include signatures. Vehicle forms add VIN and odometer readings. As-is language protects sellers who are not offering a warranty. Keeping a copy helps at tax time and if a buyer claims you never transferred the item.
